Day 12- July 8 Fredericton to Saint John NB

Day 12- July 8     Fredericton to Saint John NB

Sunny, but foggy across the river this morning as we left our campsite.  Didn't put on a lot of distance today as we made lots of little stops.  This included a covered bridge, a potato chip factory, a market and rapids.  Speed limit has increased to 110 km/h, but we will keep it just at 100 as the truck & trailer's comfortable speed is 100.  Trailer is working out great for us, just the right size and the Expedition is running great as well.
Foggy out today

Our first stop was only 1.5 hours down the road in Hartland, the smallest town in New Brunswick, with 950 people.  We drove through the 391m World's longest covered bridge across the Saint John River.  This was completed in 1922 and also known as the kissing bridge.  The cover of darkness provided an opportunity for young suitors to steal a kiss as they crossed the river.

1292 ft or 391 m

A few minutes down the road we stopped at the Covered Bridge Potato Chips factory for a self-guided tour as they had just got power back from the tropical storm.  We left in the sunshine with a few samples of chips, as the fog had lifted and it was 31 degrees.

How potato chips are made, yummy!

Followed the river Valley Scenic Drive to Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick.  After fuel, and a fruit stand stop we were in the down town area.  There were lots of trees down due to tropical storm Arthur and many places still without power.  We walked around the very quiet parliament building.  It had a beautiful spiral staircase and portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte inside, but we decided not to go on the tour.
Another parliament building for Hailey in Fredericton NB.

So which one is Queen Charlotte?

Took a scenic drive, courtesy of me, to find a country market.  When we got there they didn't have much as they were still without power.  Had lunch while feeding the goats our carrot tops.

Goats need to eat too.

Got to Saint John NB and went straight to the Reversing Rapids for the slack tide at 6:38 pm (when the water is calm, it's neither flowing in or out).  We stayed for about an hour watching the water rise over the falls.  At high tide the water from the ocean pushes against the river flowing out into the ocean.  This high tide eventually pushes the river water back up stream making it flow the opposite direction.  Normally the water would be flowing from left to right in this photo.  When it's low tide you can see the rapids/falls again.

Got to Rockwood Park in Saint John for the night after really only driving for about 3 hours today.

  1. Oh yes those Reversing Rapids...I've seen them, really something. We then went on a Moosehead Brewery tour! Sounds like you guys saw lots and learnt how to make potato chips :)
